A straight dump of the cartridge's save chip. Every NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Master System and Mega Drive emulator writes one of these; they just disagree about how big it should be.

The save chip's contents, nothing else. DraStic, melonDS, no$gba, every flash cart and real hardware all use this.
A raw save with DeSmuME's 122-byte footer stuck on the end. Only DeSmuME reads it, and nothing else will tell you why the save looks fine but does not load.
One chip, in the order the console itself uses. mupen64plus, Ares, Simple64, EverDrive 64 and anything reading a real cartridge dump want this.
The same chip with every group of four bytes reversed, which is how Project64 and Nemu64 write their saves.
All seven N64 save chips in one file, which is the only thing RetroArch's mupen64plus cores read or write.
The 128 KiB card with nothing in front of it. DuckStation, ePSXe, PCSX-ReARMed, RetroArch, Beetle PSX and every PS1 flash cart read this.
InterAct DexDrive. Most saves archived before about 2005 are in this format, and nothing written this decade reads it.
Connectix Virtual Game Station, and the PSXGame Edit tools that followed it.
What a PSP or PS3 keeps its PS1 memory cards in. GSDB reads these; see below for why it will not write one.
Read only. A .vmp header carries a signature the PSP checks before it will mount the card. Producing one means forging that signature, which is the line GSDB does not cross — and an unsigned .vmp would simply be rejected by the console, which is worse than no file at all. Convert to a raw .mcr instead and let your PSP's own card manager import it.
One game's save on its own: its directory frame, then its blocks. This is how a single save travels between cards.
The single-save format Datel's cheat cartridges wrote. Common on the old save sites and readable by almost nothing today.
One save's folder as the card holds it. What uLaunchELF, OPL Manager and mymc+ export, and what this converter writes.
Cheat cartridge containers for one save.
Read only. Each is rewritten as a .psu, the save's own files untouched.
